Credited seasons are the foundation of nearly every NFL benefit. They decide whether you are vested in the pension, how much the pension pays, whether you get severance, and some of your disability deadlines.
What counts as a credited season
You generally earn a credited season for each season you are on a team’s active roster, injured reserve or physically unable to perform list for at least three regular-season or postseason games.
What your credited seasons unlock
Credited seasons and your NFL pension
Each credited season adds a fixed monthly amount to your pension at age 55. For seasons from 2020 to 2030, that amount is $836 a month per season. A player with four credited seasons in that period would receive $3,344 a month starting at age 55.
Credited seasons and disability deadlines
With 4 or fewer credited seasons, you have 48 months from release to apply. With 5 or more, you have one year per credited season.
With fewer than 3 credited seasons, you must apply within 18 months of release.
No minimum number of credited seasons is required to apply, but you must apply within 7 years of release.
How to confirm your credited seasons
Your official count comes from the NFL Player Benefits Office. Don’t rely on memory or online stats: practice squad time doesn’t count, while injured reserve time does. If your count looks wrong, ask for a review before you file for benefits.
